Saturdays are for Speech
Saturday was my last time judging high school Speech for the season, and it got me thinking…
After competing for four years and judging for ten, I’ve now been living in the Speech world for 14 years. That’s half of my life…
I’m so grateful for Speech! I think it’s the best thing I did in high school! I have so many fond memories of those years. Laughing hysterically at rehearsals, talking to walls for hours, teaching myself to cry on command, the adrenaline rush from competing, and the reward of winning a solo event.
But it was so much more than that. I found confidence, I developed communication skills, I learned business etiquette. I was preparing myself for my future. A future where I would be talking in front of people every day, doing ridiculous things in front of people often, working with professionals and helping run businesses at a young age.
And now, I LOVE that I get to still be in that world. Though I’m not competing, I still get giddy and feel a rush of adrenaline getting to judge meets and help students experience the same thing I once did. I hope that they realize just how important it is that they are doing this for themselves and their futures.
So because I was reminiscing, I had to dust off my senior speech! I’m cringing because of how awkward I look but it was award winning so…
